I think you'll find this open access work on a potential biomarker of aging to be interesting; the researchers use it to assess the results of different lifestyle choices, finding that some of those known to shorten life expectancy produce a higher measure of biological age in their biomarker.
This seems a small step closer to validating the usefulness of such biomarkers. A number of research groups are presently developing biomarkers of aging based on characteristic patterns of epigenetic modifications or altered protein levels.
We should expect to find common patterns because the cell and tissue damage that causes aging, and the evolved reactions to that damage, are the same in everyone. The challenge lies in identifying these common patterns amidst the complex, varied alterations that occur due to individual circumstances and environment, but solid progress has being made in recent years.

It has long been suspected that hydra, small freshwater animals, are immortal in that they do not suffer degenerative aging. In practice this means that no changes in mortality rate, reproduction rate, and measures of cellular metabolism are observed over time.
This is a highly regenerative species, with individuals capable of rebuilding themselves from fragments, and it may be the case that their constant regeneration is the source of their agelessness. Regarding that agelessness, the challenge for researchers is that verifying the lack of aging in a species is a slow statistical business of wait and see, and one can always suspect at the end of any given study that the authors did not check rigorously enough for signs of aging.
Perhaps it is there, just too slow to show up over the time allotted. Certainly there has been some back and forth debate over the last twenty years regarding what the data does or does not support. This latest research provides a set of much more robust evidence in support of hydra agelessness.

The Latest US Life Expectancy and Mortality Figures - December 10, 2015
The mortality data for 2014 was recently published by the CDC. The popular press has been making a big deal of the fact that the statistical measure of life expectancy at birth has remained much the same these past few years.
This is something that epidemiologist S. Jay Olshansky has suggested might happen as a result of the consequences of greater obesity temporarily outweighing progress in medicine, but a few years is too short a period of time to confirm any departure from the long slow upward trend in life expectancy established over past decades.
Meanwhile we should bear in mind that present trends are the outcome of a period of development in which researchers were making no efforts to treat the causes of aging; gains in life expectancy were incidental. That is now changing, and future trends will reflect a research community increasingly involved in building therapies that target the mechanisms of aging. The past will not reflect the future, and this is a time of transition.

A CURE FOR TYPE 1 DIABETES?
During the study, experts were able to create a newly-modified alginate material to encapsulate human pancreatic islet cells - a way of making the body adopt them.
The modified alginate, a material originally derived from brown algae, was used to prevent the body triggering an immune response which can lead to the build-up of scar tissue and the cells ultimately being rendered useless.
Scientists created a library of almost 800 alginate derivatives and evaluated the immune response to each of them.
This led them to focus on one called triazole-thiomorpholine dioxide (TMTD), which had a minimal immune response in mice and large animals.
The researchers then implanted human islet cells encapsulated in TMTD in mice, which provided the success for the study.

Paul Krugman's latest column is a must-read on the deep and poisonous meanness of thinking that led to the Flint water crisis. Before any of it happened, by the way, the very decision to switch from a safe drinking system to the Flint River to save a few bucks was a shocker. That river was not only corrosive, it was a well-known sinkhole. It was poison incarnate. Various companies had been dumping crud in it forever. It was visibly a way to save a few bucks and spit in the face of the poor and significantly black population of Flint. This article is so detailed, and well researched and written that I have been sending the link to as many people as possible. We have to come to some understanding of the "why" of all of this before we can even begin to address the problem. And how do we address this challenge that dates back literally hundreds of years? That is a huge question and it will be a trial for our very souls for years to come.
Regarding the young couple that murdered and injured so many people in the tragedy in San Bernardino, I can only say that some kind of cleverly disguised form of duality is going on that allows these people to disassociate their daily lives from the deeply embedded Islamic part of themselves. What strikes me is that a young mother was willing to leave her 6 month-old baby to pursue jihad, knowing she was facing martyrdom for her cause. This is actually an very non-Islamic thing to do for a woman. As the Islamic state seeks to recruit women, it is for traditional reasons and mainly to provide mates to the men, take care of the home, and have more babies to fill the future ranks of the Islamic State. Young women involved in terrorism rarely are 'warriors', and their direct involvement rarely goes beyond being suicide bombers. One of the people involved in the Paris disaster was also a woman, but little has been revealed about her part in it, other than that she died during a blast when the police stormed the building where she and other terrorists were supposedly in hiding.
So, what else is going on? Does anyone else feel that it is more than an odd coincidence that our own military announced in the last few days that women will now be allowed to be actively involved in the battlefield?
There appears to be an unsettling paradigm shift going on regarding the 'sacred' feminine energies. Women are not just seeking equality with men, which is as it should be, but they are also acting like men, and not just the best qualities of men. As I have posted a few times here at Unknown Country, using the name of ISIS for the Islamic State may be undermining the sacred feminine in a particularly insidious way and altering consciousness in ways that are currently beyond our understanding.
At the risk of sounding ‘New Age’, for years we have been hearing from many out there, including William Henry, of the return of the ‘Sacred Feminine’. At this point, and maybe it is because I am a woman, I sense that this concept has been hijacked and to no good end for any one. That softer, nurturing energy is slowly but surely being drained from consciousness and on many levels. It is wrong and reflects a reality totally out of balance which is reflected in everything from politics, to religion, culture, and even Nature.
The Sacred Feminine is being systematically murdered via a slow tortuous death.
So, before we start assessing blame and pointing fingers about terrorism, destruction, and Islam, we need to go deep within and discover how each and every one of us have contributed to the state of our world and reality. Words, thoughts,and symbols are software deeply embedded in reality and driving the current ‘program’. ’Soft’ is an adjective that may be considered feminine in nature. Isn’t it interesting that a computer cannot run without ‘software’?
Oddly enough, this posting did not end up going the direction that I planned, and I can only add that the words came from my soul in ways that I don't even fully comprehend in this moment.

Scientists on Wednesday announced the discovery of stone tools at least 118,000 years old at a site called Talepu on the island of Sulawesi, indicating a human presence. The scientists said no fossils of these individuals were found in conjunction with the tools, leaving the toolmakers' identity a mystery.
"We now have direct evidence that when modern humans arrived on Sulawesi, supposedly between 60,000 and 50,000 years ago and aided by watercraft, they must have encountered an archaic group of humans that was already present on the island long before," said archaeologist Gerrit van den Bergh of University of Wollongong in Australia.
The 2004 announcement of the discovery in a Flores cave of fossils of Homo floresiensis, a species about 3 feet 6 inches (1.1 meter) tall that made tools and hunted little elephants, jolted the scientific community.
"Like on Flores, where Homo floresiensis evolved under isolated conditions over a period of almost 1 million years, Sulawesi could also have harbored an isolated human lineage. And the search for fossil remains of the Talepu toolmaker is now open," van den Bergh said.
Scientists have been eager to unravel the region's history of human habitation. Sulawesi may have served as a stepping stone for the first people to reach Australia roughly 50,000 years ago.
"Major islands such as Flores, Sulawesi, Luzon, and perhaps others as well, could have served as natural experiments in human evolution, and could throw new light on human evolution in general," van den Bergh added.
The species that made the tools may have reached Sulawesi by drifting over the ocean on tsunami debris, he said.
The researchers described 311 stone tools, most made of a very hard limestone. Archaeologist Adam Brumm of Australia's Griffith University said they were produced by humans striking one stone with another, fashioning smaller pieces with knife-like sharpness.
"They mostly comprise simple sharp-edged flakes of stone that no doubt would have been useful for basic tasks like cutting up meat, shaping wooden implements, and so on," Brumm said.
Found nearby were fossils of an extinct elephant relative and extinct giant pig with warthog-like tusks.
The research was published in the journal Nature.

I like salmon baked, broiled, grilled and barbecued. But there’s one way I don’t like it, and that’s with the gene of an ugly monster fish spliced into it.
Yet that’s exactly what’s headed for your dinner table right now, as the FDA has approved a genetically modified Frankenfish despite more question marks than the Riddler’s costume.
The feds claim they reviewed more than two decades of research before approving this monstrosity. What they WON’T say is that most of those studies had more conflicts than a soap opera.
They were small — in some cases looking at just SIX fish! — and funded by the company that makes the horrible things. And despite those huge flaws, those studies STILL managed to uncover potentially serious risks.
One found the fish may be more likely to cause allergic reactions, while another found higher levels of a growth hormone linked to multiple forms of cancer in humans.
Does that sound like something you’d want to serve for dinner? Of course not — and those aren’t the only problems with these Frankenfish.
The new salmon will be farmed in Panama from eggs raised in Canada and sold in United States.
By the time they reach you, those fish will have more miles on them than an old tire!
It might taste like one too, when you consider the gene they used to modify it came from the ocean pout, a nasty bottom feeder that looks like a two-foot slug. When fishermen catch one, they usually say “UGH! What the heck is that ugly thing?” and throw it back.
Now, the ocean pout will be part of every AquAdvantage Atlantic salmon.
The company behind the new salmon says it might be two years or more before the fish are in U.S. stores. Even then, they claim the shipments might be small at first.
But once they do reach stores, there will be no way to tell what’s what since genetically modified foods don’t have to be labeled. Fortunately, there will still be one way to get an honest-to-goodness normal fish, and that’s to make sure you eat only wild-caught salmon.

Why does everything have to revolve around a magic monoculture/all-eggs-in-one-basket ("Manhattan project" style) techno-jihad against planet earth? And BTW, what about asking the Africans (you know, the people who own the territory in question?) first, before discussing it behind their backs? Coconut Orange Moisturizing Sugar Scrub Recipe
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to exfoliate and moisturize all in one step? With this sugar scrub, you can do just that! It only takes THREE ingredients to make, and it leaves skin feeling soft, smooth, and refreshed.
Coconut Orange Moisturizing Sugar Scrub Recipe
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Shea Butter
1/2 cup Coconut Sugar
10 drops of Orange Essential Oil (or more, depending on your preference)
Directions:
Measure 1/2 cup of coconut sugar and place into a medium sized mixing bowl. Scoop 1/2 cup of shea butter into a smaller bowl.
Warm the shea butter for thirty seconds in the microwave. It won’t be completely melted, but it will be softer and easier to mix with the sugar. Pour the shea butter into the bowl with the coconut sugar, and mix well.
Add the essential oil, and mix again. To finish, spoon the mixture into a glass container. I like to use recycled jars that I have around the house.
Makes 1/2 cup of sugar scrub.
How to Use:
Start with a quarter-sized amount of scrub and massage onto skin in circular motions. The heat from your hands (or steam from the shower) will soften the shea butter. Rinse, and rub the remaining shea butter into the skin to lock in moisture.
Tips:
*Coconut sugar is a little bigger than standard white sugar, and it is brown in color. It also has a stronger scent. The larger granules might be too harsh for sensitive skin. Always do a small patch test to avoid irritating skin. Do not use on facial skin.
*Make small batches to avoid fresh ingredients going rancid.
*Decorate jars with stickers and ribbons to give as gifts!
*Exfoliate before applying a self tanner for a more even tan.

Make an Herbal Tincture by using the Folk Method
Ingredients
1 cup vodka
4 ounces of fresh herb or 2 ounces of dried herb
Instructions
Crush or chop the herb. Place the herb in a jar. (Canning jars are excellent). Cover the herb with the vodka. Add extra vodka if needed to ensure that the herb is completely submerged in the vodka. Place a lid on the jar. Label the jar with the name of the herb, liquid, and date that you started the preparation. Store the jar in a warm place. (On top of a refrigerator is a good location). Shake the jar vigorously twice daily. After two or more weeks, strain out the liquid using cheesecloth. Press the herbs while straining so that you will reap the maximum healing benefits from your tincture. Pour the tincture into glass bottles for storage. Carefully label each one. Use the same labeling information that you had on the prior label. Include dosing information. The dose varies depending upon the herb which you are using. Compost the spent herb. That is called the marc.
Tinctures which are designed to be used long-term may be prepared with vinegar. Vinegar is an excellent menstruum for extracting vitamins and minerals.

For example, the last thing that Big Pharma cured was polio and they realized that there is no money in providing a cure for anything. Essentially, Big Pharma places a bandaid over our illnesses and diseases through perpetual maintenance versus finding a cure. From this point forward, Big Pharma will focus on cures instead of temporary bandages that support their industry through lifelong medications.
A new breed of doctors will emerge who place holistic treatment ahead of anything else. In time, the Big Pharma doctor will either need to learn holistic medicine or will be phased out of existence. Of course, there are some things that cannot be cured and need maintenance through Big Pharma, but instead of using holistic treatment as a last resort, it will become the primary option.

My aunt told me this story when I was a child and I finally tracked down the original headstone at the Lake George United Church near Harvey Station NB. In 1915 a young girl named Trixie Hoyt had a suitor who got her pregnant, and she went to St Stephen to her aunt’s house to have the baby. Her parents did not like the young man, and had his letters to her sent back, and hers to him intercepted. The girl died in childbirth, not knowing the young man had written, and her parents brought her body home to be buried. Her headstone is the largest in the Churchyard, and reads: “In this cold Grave I lie, I was too young to die. Young friends, I was not to blame- to destroy my life it was his aim. Here is my deceiver’s Name: XXXXXX. We know that God is just and true, and will give this bold wretch his due.” The young man tried to come to the funeral, and apparently the mother denounced him as a murderer in the church. A few years later he wanted to marry, and came to the churchyard in the dead of night to chisel out his name. The baby lived, called “Dolorous Odell” by his grandparents, and was raised by them.
How many old grudges are set in stone this way? Strange to think the two families probably lived within a mile of each other their whole lives.

Paradoxically, though, Chinese scientists have discovered that the Tarim basin actually has an enormous supply of water — 10 times the amount in all five of North America’s Great Lakes combined, in fact. The problem is that the water in a gigantic aquifer that they describe as an underground ocean. It’s too salty for the region’s impoverished residents to use, but it apparently plays a role in helping to slow climate change.
The findings were reported in a recent article in Geophysical Research Letters.
“This is a terrifying amount of water,” professor Li Yan, who led the study at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography in Urumqi, the Xinjiang capital, told the South China Morning Post. “Our estimate is a conservative figure — the actual amount could be larger.”
The scientists actually discovered the immense underground ocean while investigating carbon dioxide absorption by the region. Ain Nature Climate Change, which found that the Mojave Desert acts as a carbon sink, suggested that the world’s deserts might play a role similar to oceans and forests in soaking up and storing some of the excess carbon emissions from human activity.
The Chinese scientists obtained deep underground water samples from nearly 200 locations in the basin and measured the carbon dioxide in them, and then compared it to the levels in the snowmelt that gradually seeps into the ground from the surrounding mountains.
The area’s alkaline soil helps the carbon dioxide to dissolve into the water, Li said.
Li described the carbon dioxide-rich water in the ground as “like a can of Coke.” If the aquifer were somehow opened, “all the greenhouse gas will escape into the atmosphere.”
A separate study by German scientists found that the region’s underground water may actually be getting saltier, as a result of massive cotton farming in the region and resulting agricultural runoff.

Italy confirms higher cancer, death rates from mob dumping
The report, which updated an initial one in 2014, blamed the higher-than-usual rates on "ascertained or suspected exposure to a combination of environmental contaminants that can be emitted or released from illegal hazardous waste dump sites and/or the uncontrolled burning of both urban and hazardous waste."
Residents have long complained about adverse health effects from the dumping, which has poisoned the underground wells that irrigate the farmland which provides vegetables for much of Italy's center and south. Over the years, police have sequestered dozens of fields because their irrigation wells contained high levels of lead, arsenic and the industrial solvent tetrachloride.
Authorities say the contamination is due to the Camorra's multibillion-dollar racket in disposing of toxic waste, mainly from industries in Italy's wealthy north that ask no questions about where the garbage goes as long as it's taken off their hands — for a fraction of the cost of legal disposal. In recent years, Camorra turncoats have revealed how the mafia racket works, directing police to specific sites where toxic garbage was dumped.
In 2014, parliament passed a law mandating the National Institute of Health, a public institution under the Health Ministry, to report on the rates of death, hospitalization and cancer in the 55 municipalities in the so-called "Land of Fires."
The new report, released Dec. 30 with little fanfare, confirmed what residents have long known, an area priest, the Rev. Maurizio Patriciello, wrote Saturday in Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian bishops' conference which has long advocated on behalf of the area's residents.
"Can we claim victory? Absolutely not," he wrote. "In this shameful, sad and painful story, we have lost everything. The government above all."

Oxfam’s head of food and climate policy, Tim Gore, said: “Climate change and economic inequality are inextricably linked and together pose one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Paris must be the start of building a more human economy for all – not just for the ‘haves,’ the richest and highest emitters, but also the ‘have-nots,’ the poorest people who are the least responsible for and most vulnerable to climate change.”
The report, authored by Gore, makes clear the extent of this inequality in emissions responsibility – globally, within and between countries. For example:
- Someone in the richest one percent of the world’s population uses 175 times more carbon on average than someone from the bottom 10 percent.
- Someone in the richest 10 percent of citizens in India uses on average just one quarter of the carbon of someone in the poorest half of the population of the United States.
- The emissions of someone in the poorest half of the Indian population are on average just one-twentieth those of someone in the poorest half of the US population.
- The total emissions of the poorest half of the population of China, around 600 million people, are only one-third of the total emissions of the richest 10 percent in the US, some 30 million people.
According to the report, the only people who benefit from the status quo and who stand to gain from a weak deal in Paris is a select group of billionaires, who have made many of their fortunes in the fossil fuel industry.Oxfam is also calling for the Paris deal to recognize the need to address loss and damage from the effects of climate change to which it is not possible to adapt, as well as ensure that all climate projects and actions respect human rights and gender equality.
