Giant, Mysterious Body of Water Found Under China Desert

The Tarim basin in China’s northwestern Xinjiang province, which covers about 350,000 square miles, is one of the driest places you could imagine. Surrounded by mountains that block the passage of moist air from the ocean, it doesn’t get much rainfall — less than 4 inches annually. And the shallow, silt-laden Tarim river doesn’t provide much water, either.

Paradoxically, though, Chinese scientists have discovered  that the Tarim basin actually has an enormous supply of water — 10 times the amount in all five of North America’s Great Lakes combined, in fact. The problem is that the water in a gigantic aquifer that they describe as an underground ocean. It’s too salty for the region’s impoverished residents to use, but it apparently plays a role in helping to slow climate change.

The findings were reported in a recent article in Geophysical Research Letters.

“This is a terrifying amount of water,” professor Li Yan, who led the study at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography in Urumqi, the Xinjiang capital, told the South China Morning Post. “Our estimate is a conservative figure — the actual amount could be larger.”

The scientists actually discovered the immense underground ocean while investigating carbon dioxide absorption by the region.  Ain Nature Climate Change, which found that the Mojave Desert acts as a carbon sink, suggested that the world’s deserts might play a role similar to oceans and forests in soaking up and storing some of the excess carbon emissions from human activity.

The Chinese scientists obtained deep underground water samples from nearly 200 locations in the basin and measured the carbon dioxide in them, and then compared it to the levels in the snowmelt that gradually seeps into the ground from the surrounding mountains.
The area’s alkaline soil helps the carbon dioxide to dissolve into the water, Li said.
Li described the carbon dioxide-rich water in the ground as “like a can of Coke.”  If the aquifer were somehow opened, “all the greenhouse gas will escape into the atmosphere.”
A separate study by German scientists found that the region’s underground water may actually be getting saltier, as a result of massive cotton farming in the region and resulting agricultural runoff.

Italy confirms higher cancer, death rates from mob dumping

ROME — An Italian parliament-mandated health survey has confirmed higher-than-normal incidents of death and cancer among residents in and around Naples, thanks to decades of toxic waste dumping by the local Camorra mob.

The report by the National Institute of Health said it was "critical" to address the rates of babies in the provinces of Naples and Caserta who are being hospitalized in the first year of life for "excessive" instances of tumors, especially brain tumors.

The report, which updated an initial one in 2014, blamed the higher-than-usual rates on "ascertained or suspected exposure to a combination of environmental contaminants that can be emitted or released from illegal hazardous waste dump sites and/or the uncontrolled burning of both urban and hazardous waste."

Residents have long complained about adverse health effects from the dumping, which has poisoned the underground wells that irrigate the farmland which provides vegetables for much of Italy's center and south. Over the years, police have sequestered dozens of fields because their irrigation wells contained high levels of lead, arsenic and the industrial solvent tetrachloride.

Authorities say the contamination is due to the Camorra's multibillion-dollar racket in disposing of toxic waste, mainly from industries in Italy's wealthy north that ask no questions about where the garbage goes as long as it's taken off their hands — for a fraction of the cost of legal disposal. In recent years, Camorra turncoats have revealed how the mafia racket works, directing police to specific sites where toxic garbage was dumped.

In 2014, parliament passed a law mandating the National Institute of Health, a public institution under the Health Ministry, to report on the rates of death, hospitalization and cancer in the 55 municipalities in the so-called "Land of Fires."

The new report, released Dec. 30 with little fanfare, confirmed what residents have long known, an area priest, the Rev. Maurizio Patriciello, wrote Saturday in Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian bishops' conference which has long advocated on behalf of the area's residents.

"Can we claim victory? Absolutely not," he wrote. "In this shameful, sad and painful story, we have lost everything. The government above all."

Superbug Bacteria Resistant to All Antibiotics Found in the UK

News outlets reported in December 2015 that UK government scientists have found a gene, known as mcr-1, that gives bacteria resistance to colistin, often used by doctors when other antibiotics fail.  Such resistance was first discovered last month in China and in the past few weeks, the resistance gene has also been found in Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Portugal and in several Asian and African countries.

The rise of the so-called post-antibiotic era is widely linked to over- and misuse of antibiotics in industrial agriculture.

The Alliance to Save our Antibiotics echoed that call, with the group’s scientific adviser Cóilín Nunan demanding the UK government “respond urgently” to the crisis.

“The routine preventative use in farming of colistin and all antibiotics important in human medicine, needs to be banned immediately,” Nunan declared.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., superbugs kill at least 23,000 Americans every year “and the problem is only getting worse,” wrote Anya Vanecek, public health digital campaigner for U.S. PIRG, in a blog post on Monday.
