Twain's birth

The novelist Mark Twain was born on this day in 1835. Beginning in November 1874, he was a regular contributor to The Atlantic, and he had a special fondness for its readership. As he explained in an 1874 letter to editor William Dean Howells:
His first story for the magazine, though, was anything but humorous. According to Twain, it was “a true story, word for word as I heard it” from a former slave, who—when Twain suggested she’d “never had any trouble”—quickly set him straight:
“Dey put chains on us an’ put us on a stan’ as high as dis po’ch,—twenty foot high,—an’ all de people stood aroun’, crowds an’ crowds. An’ dey’d come up dah an’ look at us all roun’, an’ squeeze our arm, an’ make us git up an’ walk, an’ den say, ‘Dis one too ole,’ or ‘Dis one lame,’ or ‘Dis one don’t ’mount to much.’ An’ dey sole my ole man, an’ took him away, an’ dey begin to sell my chil’en an’ take dem away, an’ I begin to cry.”

"The risk, at least for the West, is not a new world war, but merely a poisoned public life, a democracy reduced to the tyranny of tiny majorities who find emotional satisfaction in a violent, resentful rhetoric while their narrowly-elected leaders strip away their rights and persecute their neighbours. That might be quite bad enough."

Google's Translation AI Created its Own Secret Language -- All On Its Own

Google recently announced that its new AI-based translation software, Neural Machine Translation (NMT), has developed an internal language of its own to facilitate its translation of certain languages -- and Google can't explain how it did it.

Neural Machine Translation (NMT) was developed by Google to allow a more naturalistic automatic translation between languages: traditional translation software usually takes the sentences to be converted and breaks them down into individual components, leaving the resulting translations prone to errors due to differences in syntax and grammar. NMT, being AI-based, is intended to look at the overall sample sentence, and put it into a more naturalistic context, to provide a less mechanistic translation. Instead of having all of its programmed skills provided by its initial programming, NMT was taught to learn languages through experience -- hence the "neural" part of its name.

Initially, Google taught the program to translate between English and Korean, then taught it to do the same with English and Japanese. They then tried to see if it would translate between Japanese and Korean, without having to resort to using its previous experience with English to use as a go-between -- and it worked perfectly.

What NMT's programmers found was that the program used what they're calling "interlingua," an internal language that NMT used to go between Japanese and Korean, but that it devised this secret language all on its own -- a language that Google's programmers can't understand.

a rare natural phenomenon - holy balls!

This Siberian snowball fight requires some serious upper body strength, and a helmet. Giant frozen orbs recently appeared along an 11-mile stretch of Siberian coastline. The largest of the naturally formed snowballs measured nearly 3 feet across, according to Russian news reports. This frosty phenomenon is connected to ongoing weather events that could bring heavier snowfall in parts of North America and Western Europe this winter. These developments might lead to a snowy winter in parts of the U.S., particularly the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, as well as in Western Europe. Some U.S. meteorologists use Siberian snow cover levels in October to forecast how key weather patterns will likely evolve downstream.

be wild

"Be wild; that is how to clear the river. The river does not flow in polluted, we manage that. The river does not dry up, we block it. If we want to allow it its freedom, we have to allow our ideational lives to be let loose, to stream, letting anything come, initially censoring nothing. That is creative life. It is made up of divine paradox. To create one must be willing to be stone stupid, to sit upon a throne on top of a jackass and spill rubies from one’s mouth. Then the river will flow, then we can stand in the stream of it raining down.”

Wild Geese

MARY OLIVER’S “WILD GEESE”

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting --
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Analysis  — Maddy Levy

Whiteness won this election, which means white progressives need to step up. Foolish gay hope, where to find hope, and the audacity of hopelessness. If you're newly scared for your rights and safety, welcome to what it's long felt like to be black in America. How America incentivizes racism in working class white people. a letter to america

Dear America,
Amidst the confusion, and despair, and disbelief, it was suggested to me by a very close friend of mine (I won’t say her name to protect her identity) (Ann. It was Ann) that perhaps a few people would enjoy hearing my thoughts on this election. So I sat down at my computer, cleared my head, and opened a document.
Then I started crying....

...I acknowledge that Donald Trump is the president. I understand, intellectually, that he won the election. But I do not accept that our country has descended into the hatred-swirled slop pile that he lives in. I reject out of hand the notion that we have thrown up our hands and succumbed to racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and crypto-fascism. I do not accept that. I reject that. I fight that. Today, and tomorrow, and every day until the next election, I reject and fight that story.

we did get hit hard but we rise up #election2016

Taking stock of the damage --> If Trump delivers on his campaign promises, we could be facing the end of Obamacare and a repeal of the Dodd-Frank financial reforms that sought to check the banks following the financial crisis. But the biggest casualty of his presidency could be the planet. The Paris Agreement, an insufficient but important first step hammered out after years of negotiations by the countries responsible for the majority of the world's climate change-causing pollution, will become largely impotent without American participation. But Trump's advisors have a plan to pull us out of it during his first 100 days in office.

David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker, noted early this morning, "The election of Donald Trump to the Presidency is nothing less than a tragedy for the American republic, a tragedy for the Constitution, and a triumph for the forces, at home and abroad, of nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism... On January 20, 2017, we will bid farewell to the first African-American President -- a man of integrity, dignity, and generous spirit -- and witness the inauguration of a con who did little to spurn endorsement by forces of xenophobia and white supremacy. It is impossible to react to this moment with anything less than revulsion and profound anxiety."

"... But despair is no answer. To combat authoritarianism, to call out lies, to struggle honorably and fiercely in the name of American ideals -- that is what is left to do. That is all there is to do."

crying helps me grieve

I'm numb

It's a dark day in America. I'm numb. Many of us are right now.
I didn't think Leone Ermer's "The Nightmare," which I posted at the top of yesterday's liveblog, would be so prescient, but, sadly, it is starting to look that way. In the image the female personification of liberty is exposed, passed out on a mattress while a hate-donned monster sits on her chest. The creature is looking at us, trying to figure out if we will help the green woman or ignore her.
That woman once personified a vision of America and she died tonight. She represented the idealism of a country that imagined itself as a beacon of hope for all people but she may have committed suicide, we still don't know. Read More →

Unbeknownst to Sedgwick, Dylan had secretly married his girlfriend Sara Lownds in November 1965.
