it's the end of the beans?

C’est la fin des haricots

Perfect for when you’re feeling furious, ‘c’est la fin des haricots’ literally translates as ‘it’s the end of the beans’. It equates to the English, ‘that’s the last straw’. The phrase makes beans feel suddenly very dramatic, and we’re not the only ones who find it funny.

Mitochondria

Whenever I see my 10-year-old daughter brimming over with so much energy that she jumps up in the middle of supper to run around the table, I think to myself, "those young mitochondria."

Mitochondria are our cells’ energy dynamos.

Storm Show Studios

Readers’ Choice:
Best Filmmaker:
Darrell Miller (that guy above)

After four decades on the planet and 17 years of filmmaking, Darrell Miller’s love for Jackson still shines through. Miller combined his efforts as Storm Show Studios with Ryan Halverson’s Full Room Productions in 2011 to inject new life into his projects. The two are producing homegrown ski films featuring local riders ripping it in the Tetons and beyond. Unlike many movie crews who close areas and let the world know when they are filming, Darrell (if you can actually spot him) may be found on his island of powder stashes with cameras as small as coffee cups. This low impact lurking may go unnoticed by skiers nearby, but when autumn comes along and the films are unleashed, the town speaks; people arrive in droves for D. Mill debuts. Beneath every action packed second of these films is the knowledge that these powder feats were all earned. The crew sweats their own boot pack and makes their own judgments without the help of guides. Darrell’s films continue to provide a certain level of realism that is often lost in modern day ski films. The countless hours spent producing these segments enhances the realism. Darrell’s awe and dedication for Jackson and its mountain athletes is evidenced in every single flick.

laziness trend? No! #Millennials #Foodies

SOURCE

Millennials—those born between the early 1980s and 2000s—don’t eat cereal?  Millennial bashing is nothing new. Time magazine, for example, ran a cover story in 2013 entitled, “The me, me, me generation: Millennials are lazy, entitled narcissists who still live with their parents.”

Of the 80 million Millennials, more than half call themselves “foodies.” From Instagramming every meal (#avocadotoast) to spending upwards of 25 percent of their paychecks in restaurants, most in this age group are undeniably fixated on sourcing, cooking and enjoying food.

Author Eve Turow has a name for her food-obsessed cohorts: “Generation Yum.” In her book “A Taste of Generation Yum, How the Millennial Generation’s Love for Organic Fare, Celebrity Chefs and Microbrews Will Make or Break the Future of Food,” she digs deep into the reasons why her generation is intrigued by all aspects of food. “I really think it comes down to technology,” Turow writes. “In a land of over-stimulation, over-consumption, we are, in many ways, a malnourished generation.”

Immersing themselves in the sensual pleasures of gardening, cooking from scratch, and taking photos of food is a backlash against technology, an antidote to living in a virtual world.

Despite living through one of the worst periods of unemployment and student loan debt in American history, Generation Yummers, Turow explains, make it a priority to spend their hard-earned bucks on organic kale, homebrewing equipment, single origin coffee, and truffle cheese. They’re just not spending money on industrially produced boxed cereal. Cereal companies: You should be very, very nervous.

By 2017, Millennials will comprise more than one-fourth of the U.S. population, and are projected to have more spending power than any other generation.  Milllennials are not just spending money on food, they are Tweeting and hashtagging their way to make impactful contributions to the Food Movement.  Any Millennial foodie worth his or her organic salt knows the difference between cage-free and pastured eggs, grass fed and commodity beef, and is well-versed in the topics of food waste, fair wages for food workers, school lunches, community hunger, and how to sign up for a local CSA.

for NEXT YEAR!
ARTIST RESIDENCY
Thank you so much to everyone who applied this year, and congratulations to this year’s Residents! Theresa Bloise, Keith Carollo, Erin Dorney, Marc Drumwright, Carmen Maria Machado, Zora O’Neill, Eleanor Wilson, and JooHee Yun!

The short version:

Six artists. One week each. Free stay. No strings attached.

The little bit longer version:

Each year, from January through March, six selected artists will be awarded a no-cost, week-long residency at The Spruceton Inn to spend creating.
As artists ourselves, we understand the need for solitude, the need to get away from your everyday surroundings so you can escape into the world you are summoning without the usual distractions. This residency provides exactly that.
Residents are chosen through an open call by me (Casey Scieszka) and my husband, Steven Weinberg. The application consists of two parts which can be filled out and submitted here. Applications are accepted during the month of October. You will be notified either way by November 15th.
Currently the program is open only to writers and 2D visual artists (21 and over) because these are the artistic realms with which Steven and I are personally involved. Collaborations will not be accepted at this time.
If the selected artists wish, we will have some of their work available to read/look at around the inn’s communal spaces for everyone to enjoy.
We will be accepting applications online during the month of Ocotber 2016 for Winter 2017.

The increased seismic activity this weekend could mean it is bubbling up for a devastating "big one" eruption - the likes of which have not been seen since 2000 when 41,000 people had to evacuate.
The latest flurry of eruptions happened over 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday, coinciding with a magnitude 1.8 earthquake.
They followed a series of four other eruptions last Monday that were also triggered by two smaller earthquakes over a spate of 24 hours.

I lived in Portland for years. I even took my mom to see Darcelle perform - drag queens were exceptionally lovely entertainers.

She's now more infamous! Darcelle Crowned World's 'Oldest Drag Queen Performer' By Guinness

It’s official. At 85 years old, Darcelle now wears the crown as the world’s oldest drag queen performer.
Guinness World Records awarded the City of Roses’ grand dame — who operates Darcelle XV Showplace, the longest-running drag revue west of the Mississippi — the designation this week.
Portland resident Doyle Stiles, a friend of Darcelle’s who helped shepherd the application to completion, said he got an email from Guinness early Tuesday morning with the news.
Doyle said the quest for the world record began in November when a female impersonator who is younger than Darcelle was listed as the world’s oldest.
“I immediately got into contact with Guinness and found out what the process was,” Doyle said.
Doyle spent the following months assembling paperwork, which included the birth certificate for Walter Cole, who has been playing the character of Darcelle since the late 1960s, as well as witness statements from the likes of Portland Mayor Charlie Hales and former Oregon Gov. Barbara Roberts. Guinness requested witness statements as proof that Darcelle was still performing (and she is — at least four times a week).

WORD(S)

parnel /PAR-nəl/. noun. A prostitute. More specifically: a priest’s mistress (though who’s to say none of those were love matches?). Often seen in the phrase “tender parnel.” Also rendered as pannell, pernel and others. From Pernel, a shortened form of the name Petronilla which was, at one time, a popular feminine form of the name Peter. Beyond that, the etymology is unclear.
Henry Hankovitch, con guítar,
did a short Zen pray,
on his tatami in a relaxed lotos
his mind on nuffin, rose-blue breasts,
and gave his parnel one French kiss
(John Berryman)
Get you to church and have a good priest that can tell you what marriage is; this fellow will but join you together as they join wainscot; then one of you will prove a shrunk panel, and like green timber warp, warp.
(William Shakespeare)

4Editor's_Best_Instagrammer_with_Class

In an era of social media excess, things that appear to be reality may not be reality at all.

One of the larger critiques of social media begs the question: Does it come from art or ego?

Humble yet talented Tristan Greszko grams beautiful images without all the hype. Cofounder of the Teton Artlab in 2007, this adventure photographer’s accomplishments include Tiny Jackson (google it), national and international publications, completion of two Teton Picnics, and climbing El Cap. In the Insta world, he keeps the class without flaunting pictures of his chiseled body glistening in the sun or posting countless selfies of himself getting after it in the mountains; most importantly, he does not believe in hashtags

When asked about this slight counterculture perspective, Tristan explains that while people need followers to be relevant, “hashtags just play into the rat race.”

Photography, he said, “Suits my inherent need to search for perfection – not in the universal sense, but maybe in a tiny localized sense – within an individual image, or a moment, or a person in a moment, or just the need to continually refine and improve my skills as a photographer.” Gram subjects of @tgreszko note that he does not disrupt the lifestyle while taking photographs. If anything, Tristan adds to the lifestyle with his mad skill, good attitude and great snacks. This incognito presence seems to be a rarity in the world of instantaneous self-aggrandizing, but that’s what makes this guy pretty darn classy.

“Winters has managed to aim a giant magnifying glass at the problem of institutionalized racism in America in a way that has never been done before. This Orwellian allegory takes place in the present day but in a United States where Lincoln was assassinated before he ever became president, the Civil War never took place, and slavery still exists in four states, known as the Hard Four. In agile prose that manages to convey the darkest of humors, Winters tackles the most sensitive of issues such as the motivations of misguided white liberals involved in racial politics, the use of racial profiling, and the influence of racism on the very young. Underground Airlines is the most important book of the summer. Read it.”

"This multigenerational saga follows the fortunes of the Sel and Duke families from early Colonial days to the present, spanning centuries and continents as they make their living not only from the bounty of the land but also from the ravaging and destruction of it. As always, Proulx is brilliant at creating a story that flows impeccably, and her nature writing is some of the most beautiful and evocative to be found in modern literature. This novel is an epic work, a fictional Silent Spring that will linger with readers long after completion."

Why shop local and indie?

When you shop at a locally owned independent business, your entire community benefits:
The Economy
  • Spend $100 at a local and $52 of that stays in your community. Spend the same $100 at a national chain, and your community only sees $43.
  • Local businesses create higher-paying jobs for our neighbors.
  • More of your taxes are reinvested in your community--where they belong.
The Environment
  • Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify your community.
The Community
  • Local retailers are your friends and neighbors—support them and they’ll support you.
  • Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains.
  • More independents means more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community.
Now is the time to stand up and join your fellow individuals in the IndieBound mission supporting local businesses and celebrating independents.
